Otlica - Kovk

The village of Otlica lies in the Vipava Valley and comprises several isolated farms and four scattered hamlets, namely
Sibirija,
Kitajska,
Kurja Vas and
Cerkovna Vas. Otlica is situated on the
Gora Plateau, on the margin of the
Trnovo Forest, which lies on the high Karst plateau, or to be more specific, on the north-western side of the Vipava Valley, along the road Predmeja – Col.
The village got the name after the nearby
Otliško Okno which offers a breathtaking view on the Vipava Valley. The Otliško Okno is a Karst phenomenon and is a natural hole in a rocky coral ridge made of Jurassic limestone.
The area is full of Karst features such as sinkholes, abysses and karrens with little cultivable land, which enables only limited cattle breeding. However, the pastures are overgrowing. The locals are engaged mostly in forestry and lace-making. Along the road stands the parish
Church of Guardian Angels. Moreover, Guardian Angel’s “Šagra”, a traditional village festival in Slovenian coastal region, called Angel Sunday takes place annually on the first Sunday in September.
Along the road towards Col lies the scattered village of Kovk. In the middle of the village rises up the
Mt. Sinji Vrh (1002 metres above sea level), where you can enjoy the view over the entire Vipava Valley and see all the way to Venice and Istria. Tourist farming has successfully developed right up here, which, besides the splendid view, offers also delicious traditional food.
The Sinji Vrh Tourist Farm has well established cultural tourism, because in summer it hosts numerous renowned artists, participating in various artistic workshops. Most known workshops are Slovenia, Open for Artists (Slovenija, odprta za umetnost) and Artists for the Karitas Charity (Umetniki za Karitas). Nearby the farm, you can see the deserted water reservoirs of the former waterworks. The Sinji Vrh Tourist Farm is the perfect starting point for visiting the nearby monuments, such as
caves, sinkholes, karrens, ice caves, the Smreka Dell (Smrekova Draga), Otliško Okno (a hole in a rocky ridge), stone pillar in a shape of a lighthouse, situated along the main road in Predmeja and many others.
The locals warmly recommend the visitors
a hike across the hill of Angelska Gora. The theme path is a circular trail, which reminds of a necklace with true pearls of nature, created with bare human hands. These reflect the spirit of time and the never ending human adaptation, his dependence on nature in capability to live in hard but at the same time magical conditions on the Gora Plateau. You are advised to start your path from the centre of the village, more precisely from the hamlet of Cerkovna or from the parish church. You can walk along the entire path or only a part of it and is entirely up to you how much time you would like to spend hiking across the plateau – five, six hours or maybe even the whole day if you want to reveal all the secrets of the Gora Plateau or talk to the locals about the present life up there.
Everyone who is eager to know more about the Gora Plateau, whether about its origin or history, is welcome to take a book, or better an anthology, titled
The Mother of the Gora Plateau (Mati Gora), published by the Gora Association for Preservation and Protection of Natural and Cultural Heritage in 2001, when the village celebrated the 400th anniversary of the first settlement. This book says that more than 40 authors joined their energy, the energy of Gora and its children and wrote a book about the Gora Plateau.
It is said, that the people of Gora are the children of stone and water. You will surely be convinced this to be true as you read this book.
Kovk is also a famous meeting spot of local scouts, who renovated the old school building especially for this purpose.
