Caves in the Area of the Municipality of Ajdovščina

Two caves are situated in the area of Ajdovščina, both suitable for tourist sightseeing, of course with proper equipment and with a help of a cave guide. Under the village of Brje the Nelčič Cave is situated, which is a 600 metre-long horizontal cave, formed on flysch strata. In the hamlet of Dol in the vicinity of the village of Predmeja on the Gora Plateau, lies the Ledenica ice cave, which is actually a sinkhole, extended into a cave, having about 150 metres in depth. Sightseeing of these two caves is possible with guidance of the cavers of the Danilo Remškar Caving Club from Ajdovščina.

Ice Caves and the Snow Cave on the Gora Plateau
Ice and snow in caves on the Gora Plateau remain throughout the entire year. The main reason for snow turning into ice is the cold air stream that flows into the cave during winter and thus freezes the water and the snow. The water that flows into the cave in spring freezes due to low temperatures and for this reason ice does not have the chance to melt but to accumulate in the cave. The cold air stream could be felt even at the bottom of the cave. Such caves were in the past of great importance for the local economy as the ice was transported to Gorizia, Trieste and even all the way to Alexandria in Africa. The most known ice cave on the Gora Plateau is the Paradana ice cave, situated along the road to the village of Lokve. However, two more caves, a snow cave and an ice cave are located in the vicinitiy of the hamlet of Tiha dolina, near the village of Predmeja.
If you are interested, you can see these caves for yourself, but if you want to descent into one of them, we recommend you to arranage a guided tour at the Danilo Remškar Caving Club from Ajdovščina.
