REMNANTS OF THE PAST

For thousands of years people have been tempted to live in the fertile and viniferous Vipava Valley. Historians argue that it was populated already long before Christ, some say even in the Neolithic period. However, a number of archaeological sites and remnants show that the valley undoubtedly reached its golden age in the Roman times.
RICHNESS OF NATURAL HERITAGE

One of the most prominent Karst phenomena are the Karst sources of the rivers Vipava and Hubelj, the Bela River, the many fossils and some endemic animal and plant species that are otherwise rarely found in nature.
CULTURAL HEREITAGE
The cultural heritage of the Vipava valley is very rich. There are numerous sacral monuments and sites and, the majority of them are churches that were being built from the Gothic period on. Nevertheless, the Baroque period had the most profound impact on them. Besides the varied and valuable interior equipment inside the churches, they also represent a typical feature of the countryside.
VALLEY OF MANORS AND CASTLES
Numerous castles and manors spread all over the valley. The most magnificent of them is undoubtedly the Zemono Manor. However, the castle in the village of Lože is being renovated. Two most beautiftul historical monuments are the villages of Vipavski Križ and Goče, urban centres of the towns of Vipava and Ajdovščina and the hamlet of Tabor above the village of Črniče, which is one of the rare people’s fortification surrounded by a wall.
ARCHITECTURAL AND TECHNICAL MONIMENTS

Besides the typical Vipava houses, shrines, small chapels and features that were chiselled in stone by the local craftsmen are here well preserved. Technical monuments are conected to the water, whether to the Hubelj River, the Vipava River or to the Lokavšček River. The iron and copper foundries in the upper stream of the Hubelj River, which were renowned in their heyday in the 16th and 17th century, are today well preserved and renovated. Later on, several mills and sawmils, a paper mill, a brewery, a pasta factory and many more were founded on the Hubelj River and the Lokavšček River. Moreover, mills and sawmills were also operating on the Močilnik River and on the Vipava River.
